Policy

Ol' Remus offers his opinions as-is, where is. He rarely cites support for his opinions so they are, in that sense, unwarranted. He comes by them largely by having lived and watched and listened rather than by argument or persuasion. His opinions, not having been arrived at by debate are, therefore, not particularly vulnerable to debate. He entertains opposing opinion but he feels no inclination, much less obligation, to discuss or defend his own. Whatever usefulness or amusement readers may find in them is their own business.

Woodpilereport.com is an entirely private information service that is my sole property made available to others as a form of free personal expression under my de jure Preamble Citizen’s right as later guaranteed in the First Article in Amendment to the Constitution. Woodpilereport.com is not a “public accommodation” and it is preemptively exempt from any forced or coerced accommodation, via legislation or bureaucratic interpretation thereof or any dictate, directive, or decree by any agency of government or by any NGO or by any individual under any future “Fairness Doctrine” or similar charade. I reserve the right to refuse service - to wit: to refuse posting, linking, or mention of anyone or anything, at my sole discretion - to any person, agency, corporation, or other entity.

Woodpile Report is from the Hermetic School of websites. There is no advertising, no partnerships, log-ins, popups, subscriptions, print version, Disqus, feedback section, tip jar or shop. There are no trackers, cookies, LSOs, analytics or widgets. Posted links are cleansed of superfluous identifiers.

Although the sentiment warms Remus's tiny little heart, Woodpile Report has no mechanism for receiving donations or gifts, nor does he accept them by subterfuge.

Woodpile Report does not maintain an archive. Some issues linger on the server until Remus gets around to deleting them. Don't confuse Woodpile Report with a blog. It isn't. It's an olde tymme internet site made by hand and archives are a dispensable chore.

Privacy

Here at Yer ol' Woodpile Report all incoming email is automatically detected and deleted by instantaneously disconnecting before it arrives. Taking no chances, a clever device shreds Remus's hard drive into nanosize filaments and sinters them into a bust of Chopin. Meanwhile, from a hardened and very remote location, he sends a bot that deletes said email on your end by tricking your PC into self-immolation. Other devices vaporize every ISP that handled it and beam the resulting plasma into deep space. Then he sends a strike team of armed pre-med students to administer a prefrontal lobotomy so you can't remember your own birthday much less writing him an email. Finally, all persons in your zip code with the same last name as yours are put into the witness protection program. Now that's privacy.

Where the name came from

What's with the title Woodpile Report? Well, it's this way, from January of 2004 until mid-2007 it was emailed to a subscibers list. In that form it was titled the Woodpile Weather Report. A picture of ol' Remus's woodpile appeared at the top as both a weather report and, by documenting the progression from log pile to chunkwood to a split 'n stacked woodpile, a witness to the seasonal changes. It was the thin thread from which comments hung. As thrilling as all that was, the comments metastasized and took over. But the title remains.

Tactics of the Left
Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals

Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have

Never go outside the experience of your people.

Whenever possible, go outside the experience of the enemy.

Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.

Ridicule is man's most potent weapon

A good tactic is one your people enjoy.

A tactic that drags on for too long becomes a drag.

Use different tactics and actions and use all events of the period.

The threat is more terrifying than the thing itself.

Maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition.

If you push a negative hard and deep enough, it will break through into its counterside.

The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.

Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, polarize it.

How To Create A Socialist State
by Saul Alinsky

1) Healthcare — Control healthcare and you control the people

2) Poverty — Increase the Poverty level as high as possible, poor people are easier to control and will not fight back if you are providing everything for them to live.

3) Debt — Increase the debt to an unsustainable level. That way you are able to increase taxes, and this will produce more poverty.

4) Gun Control — Remove the ability to defend themselves from the Government. That way you are able to create a police state.

5) Welfare — Take control of every aspect of their lives (Food, Housing, and Income).

6) Education — Take control of what people read and listen to — take control of what children learn in school.

7) Religion — Remove the belief in the God from the Government and schools.

8) Class Warfare — Divide the people into the wealthy and the poor. This will cause more discontent and it will be easier to take (Tax) the wealthy with the support of the poor.

Don't harass the opposition.

The Five Rules of Propaganda
Norman Davies

Simplification: reducing all data to a single confrontation between ‘Good and Bad', ‘Friend and Foe'.

Disfiguration: discrediting the opposition by crude smears and parodies.

Transfusion: manipulating the consensus values of the target audience for one's own ends.

Unanimity: presenting one's viewpoint as if it were the unanimous opinion of all right-thinking people: drawing the doubting individual into agreement by the appeal of star performers, by social pressure, and by ‘psychological contagion'.

Orchestration: endlessly repeating the same messages in different variations and combinations.”

The Psychology of Cyber Attacks
Robert Cialdini

Principle of Liking - people tend to form trust with those they’re attracted to, both physically and emotionally

Social Proof - People are motivated more by what others do than a perceived or even quantifiable benefit

Rule of Reciprocation - Humans feel a sense of obligatory quid pro quo

Commitment & Consistency - Most people stick with their original decisions despite information that supports changing their course

Principle of Authority - Authority, whether real or perceived, elicits obedience in many people

Principle of Scarcity - People want to be included in exclusive offers and often make poor choices under pressure

How to prosecute anybody

Look around for "suspicious" behavior, i.e., behavior on the part of a private citizen that can be made to appear suspicious

Ruthlessly probe every element of the "suspect's" life, using the effectively infinite resources of the State, until enough "suspicious" behavior has been amassed

Assemble a huge list of charges to place before a grand jury

Present the case in such a fashion as to promote the less plausible accusations and obscure the more plausible ones, thus securing a grab-bag indictment

Offer the indicted person a plea bargain that will spare him centuries in prison and complete pauperization at the bargain price of a few years and/or a few thousand dollars.

Narcisse-Virgilio Diaz, Forest Scene, 1860

Narcisse-Virgilio Diaz was a Spanish orphan who lost a leg to an infected bite in his teens. He lived in Barbizon near Paris doing menial work until he was taught the fundamentals of oil painting by Rousseau in the last years of his life. A talented and hard worker, he became a central figure of the Barbizon school. Diaz died in 1876 at age sixty-nine.

art-remus-ident-04.jpg Antifa posers with fantasies of a Civil War II need to worry more. ATF says more than half of all rifles sold were scary semiauto carbines. Combine these so-called "assault rifles" with the current Big Thing for traditional bolt action rifles: shooting very small targets at very long distances, and with more powerful ammo. Then explain to the campus commandos they do this as a hobby, for fun.

For the nonshooter's information, a practiced marksman with a well tuned bolt action rifle can hit a saucer at eight hundred yards, which is about the distance from the front door of the Empire State Building to the entrance of Penn Station/Madison Square Garden, or about two and a half city blocks. Incidentally, the bullet would hit the saucer more than a second before the sound of the "bang" arrived.

For a looksee on how it's done:

YouTube - Setting up your Long Range Hunting Rifle: 0 -1000 yards ... video, 23m 15s

In the video you'll hear the terms "MOA" and "minute". It means "minute of angle", or about an inch at a hundred yards, two inches at two hundred yards, and so on. A rifle that shoots a minute of angle will hit a maximum of one half-minute from point of aim. At eight hundred yards, this means four inches, in any direction, from point of aim. And minute of angle accuracy is unremarkable in precision shooting, it's considered entry level.

For comparison to those "trained professionals" in law enforcement, here's a quote from Duane Norman's report at Free Market Shooter:

When you hear about the NYPD taking 16 shots to kill one bad guy and accidentally wounding nine civilian passers-by, or officers firing 84 shots at a murder suspect and missing 83 times (with the only hit registering in the suspect’s calf), don’t blame the officers—blame their poor training and equipment.

Precision rifles typically have a two or three pound pull. Mr. Norman says New York City mandates a twelve pound trigger pull (!) for police duty weapons. For starters.

This may be the most important development you'll read about this week.

Firearms News - Tazewell County Forms Militia in Response to New Virginia Gun Laws ... incredible news coming from Virginia, and is likely a move that anti-gun lawmakers and politicians did not expect.

Excerpt: " ... this is not limited to just our county, but also as part of a network of sister counties showing solidarity for both Virginia’s, and the American Constitution."

Tazewell County is in northwestern Virginia. In other news, the Culpepper County Sheriff announced he will deputize thousands of citizens "to protect their constitutional right to own firearms". Culpepper County is in northeast Virginia.

At last count more than 40 Virginia counties have declared themselves "gun rights sanctuary counties", meaning law enforcement is advised not to enforce unconsitutional gun laws. This is nearly half the state's counties. In response, Virginia Attorney General Herring made an announcement:

WTVR Richmond - Herring said when the General Assembly passes gun control legislation those laws will be enforced...

Following the November's election, which saw Democrats take control of both the state House and Senate, the expectation is lawmakers will pass a number of gun control measures in 2020 for Democratic Governor Ralph Northam to sign.

According to CNN, one proposed bill would "prohibit the sale, transport, possession, transfer and manufacturing of an assault firearm". It doesn't get much more "infringed" than that. Also in the works is the outrageous "universal background check" law, meaning all sales or transfers of all guns by any persons must include a background check. In effect this means going through an FFL to sell, trade, lend or give a gun to your neighbor.

CNN also notes the back alley treachery that brought things to this pass:

Everytown For Gun Safety, a gun-control group aligned with billionaire and presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg, played an outsized influence on the victory. The group spent $2.5 million in the state getting two Senate seats and one House seat flipped from Republican to Democrat in the November primaries.

Golly gee whiz Sparky, wherever did they get $2.5 million? If ever there were an example of an "enemy of the people", Mr. Bloomberg would be that example.

JMD at Survival Blog writes,

There has been a lot of discussion regarding the use of railroad tracks for travel in a post-SHTF world. On the plus side railways tend to be more isolated from built-up areas, so you may stand a better chance of avoiding people, and they tend avoid steep climbs and drops, which should make traveling somewhat easier. On the other hand, if you’ve ever tried walking a railroad track you know how difficult it can be to comfortably match your stride to the spacing of the ties, and if you need to run you’ll probably end up tripping. It’s also virtually impossible to ride a bike on railroad tracks without rattling your teeth out.

I'm one of those who would use railroad tracks, and have recommended doing so in Woodpile Report with some tips and cautions. I'm a diehard railfan who has walked miles of tracks, for decades, sometimes starting before sunup, sometimes until well after dark. You had better know what you're doing, even in normie times.

There are places where using railways make sense post-SHTF, other places not so much, still others never ever. I've given it much thought, but it didn't occur to me anyone would consider walking or riding a bike on the actual tracks. Let me count the ways it's over-the-top bizarre—no, not enough space. We'll have to settle for something like those inane safety stickers you find on stepladders.

In post-SHTF, even walking the adjacent Maintenance Of Way lanes may be unacceptably risky. Pick a railway, walk it for a few miles. Imagine hostiles. Much will be revealed. Now imagine walking on the actual tracks looking like those target ducks in a shooting gallery ... no, don't, the thought makes me queasy. The essay is otherwise valuable, worth a place in my reference archives, and yours.

Why use railways at all in sketchy times? Among many reasons, lightly used secondary or abandoned railways often have out-of-the-way bridges over waterways, as the author points out. These alone may be worth a significant detour, but if you're not a local you'd not know they existed. There are several railroad atlases in print, rich with detail, especially the regional editions. I keep 'em with my topos.

The internet is not a given post-SHTF. Maps are. I also do an eyeball check at intervals. It pays. Two such bridges on my bugout routes have been taken down over the years.

So. Enough of this. What else we got?

Brioche is something between bread and pastry, being bread with extra butter and egg. Whoever said, if anyone did, "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche", didn't say "let them eat cake," they said "let them eat brioche". I've read there was a law requiring bakers to sell brioche if they ran out of bread, at the same price, so it's understandable as something other than callous disregard for the citizenry in a time of scarcity.

Antony Davies and James Harrigan explain transferism, at the Foundation for Economic Education:

These four in ten Americans, and the politicians who speak for them most vocally, are not advocating socialism at all; they are advocating what we should really call “transferism.” Transferism is a system in which one group of people forces a second group to pay for things that the people believe they, or some third group, should have. Transferism isn’t about controlling the means of production. It is about the forced redistribution of what’s produced.

From PA World and Times, about how police are turned against the citizenry by their political masters

Someone once explained how early on during the Yellow Vests uprising, one group of riot police would block protesters on one end of the street while, unbeknownst to that squad of cops, another police unit would block them at the other end. The two units would, by design, not know about each other. Therefore, each group of cops would become frustrated with the protesters that were prevented from moving in either direction.

Stuff you may want to think about
Synopsis with links

Hive mind, Z Man - The word “resist” is an important clue. When one is on attack, resist is not the word you use to describe your efforts. The word “resist” is always used in the context of defending something from an aggressor. It is this sense of being a victim, that their person has been violated by Trump, that is behind the impeachment rage. It is why any analysis of the Left in isolation tends to miss the point. Everything these people do has to be examined within the larger context of the hive mind. These are people who have no agency, because what defines them is their relations with the other nodes in the Progressive hive mind. When you deal with one, you are dealing with all of them.

Codevilla, American Greatness - Since 2016, the ruling class is expressing an identity that has grown and solidified over more than a half century, and that it is not capable of changing. Restoring anything like the Founders’ United States of America is out of the question. Constitutional conservatism on behalf of a country a large part of which is absorbed in revolutionary identity; that rejects the dictionary definition of words; that rejects common citizenship, is impossible. Not even winning a bloody civil war against the ruling class could accomplish such a thing. In 2016 and since, we have learned that our ruling class has amassed the power to revel in making us miserable. We have also learned we must undo or separate ourselves from them, their structures, and priorities. They regard us as illegitimate, we have no choice but to return the favor.

Woke, American Greatness - In the university’s zero-sum game, something was lost to provide the needed space for these therapeutic new classes. And what was tossed were precisely those traditional courses in English grammar, composition, literature, foreign languages, philosophy, and history that provided the student with the facts-based architecture central to fundamental education. Today’s students are the most unaware generation in our nation’s history, unwoken to the full dimensions of those who have channeled them into a decade or more of crushing debt, left them with unmarketable degrees, nourished both their ignorance of the world, past and present, and their political arrogance.

Numbers, Z Man - The Chinese tendency toward authoritarian bureaucracy was too strong for Marxism and now too strong for neo-liberalism. China today is the same place Marco Polo found seven centuries ago, just decorated with technology appropriated from the West. China is proof of the great chain of causality. Her biology and culture dictate the institutions, politics and economics. This is why fears of a ruling class dominated by people of an Oriental outlook is probably misplaced. The displacement of whites from the ruling class is just another symptom of the decline. A ruling class distrusted by and alien to the majority of the population is not going to have a long future, no matter how smart and ruthless they are as people. Numbers still matter.

1939. Malin Oregon

Euro, Gold Goats 'n Guns - The euro, as a currency, was guided by German industrialists. The single exchange rate underprices the value of Northern European industrial entities while overpricing Southern Europe’s productive capacity. This has led to exactly where we are today with massive internal imbalances which have hollowed out these economies, further eroded their productive capacity and competitiveness and left them with a mountain of unpayable debt, a further means to extract the last of the country’s real wealth when the inevitable crisis hits and the debt has to be restructured. To think that this point wasn’t understood by the people who designed the euro is to be terminally naive.

CWII, American Thinker - When Barry descended from the heavens to lead America and the Democrats in the transformation of the nation, the left dispensed with all pretense of respect for Americans. In reality “the people” have been nothing but a disappointment to the left. Graciously, the left had given Americans the opportunity to do as they were told, and they refused, costing the Democrats the House, the Senate, and the Presidency in 2016. There will be no more trying to rally Americans around to their way of thinking. “The people,” going forward, are the enemy. They are coming for those who will not acquiesce to the left’s plans for America. All that remains is how the people will react. Normal Americans have had enough, they are going to fight.

Dems, James Kunstler - What is the Democratic Party today? Well, it’s the cheerleading squad for “seventeen” government agencies that add up to the craftily-labeled “intel community,” a warm-and-fuzzy coalition of snoops, false witnesses, rogue lawfare cadres, seditionists, and bad-faith artists working sedulously to hide their previous misdeeds with ever-fresh ones. They’re the party against free speech, against due process of law, the party determined to provoke war with Russia. They’re the party of sexual confusion, sexual hysteria, and sexual conflict, the party of kangaroo courts, cancel culture, erasing boundaries (including national borders), and of making up rules for all that as they go along — like the Nazis and Soviets used to do. The ideas and policies they advocate are so comprehensively crazy that their old support of slavery looks quaintly straightforward in comparison.

art-remus-ident-04.jpg Kunstler says the Dems will detonate when the Barr and Durham investigations go public. Yeah, right. He says America has turned against them because they're lunatics. "The wheels are coming off," and "the walls are closing in". Horse hockey. Ask the good people of Virginia if the Democratic Party is collapsing into irrelevancy. It's like black mold, you can never get rid of it.

Red Guards, Campus Reform - When former ICE Acting Director Tom Homan took the stage at the University of Pennsylvania, a mob chanted and hurled insults at him. The act of intimidation was successful: the event was canceled. This is just the latest in a growing recent list of such incidents. How have these students come to embrace the brute anti-intellectualism perfected by the communist Red Guards in China to the Nazi Brownshirts alike? In the past several years, an ongoing process of the degradation of traditional academic culture in American institutions of higher learning has significantly accelerated. They are now in critical condition. The students have not invented this bizarre worldview on their own. There are professors who adhere to it as well, and they teach it to their students.

1942. Fort Kent, Maine

Notice the audience of little kids in the background. This photo is part of a series, some of which are posted in past issues of Woodpile Report.

Fort Kent is a town of about 4,000 in northern Maine, across the Saint John River from Quebec. Most families speak French at home. The population in 1942 was about 5,300.

We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission.
Ayn Rand

. . . . .

Gold is the money of kings, silver is the money of gentlemen, barter is the money of peasants and debt is the money of slaves.
Traditional

. . . . .

If, before undertaking some action, you must obtain the permission of society—you are not free, whether such permission is granted to you or not. Only a slave acts on permission. A permission is not a right.
Ayn Rand

. . . . .

The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities.
Ayn Rand

Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thought crime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.
George Orwell, 1984

. . . . .

There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.
Ayn Rand

. . . . .

The socialist ideal eventually goes viral, and the majority learns to game the system. Everyone is trying to live at the expense of everyone else. In the terminal phase, the failure of the system is disguised under a mountain of lies, hollow promises, and debts. When the stream of other people's money runs out, the system collapses.
Kevin Brekke

. . . . .

When you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing; when you see that money is flowing to those who deal not in goods, but in favors; when you see that men get rich more easily by graft than by work, and your laws no longer protect you against them, but protect them against you … you may know that your society is doomed.
Ayn Rand

. . . . .

Because the regime is captive to its own lies, it must falsify everything. It falsifies the past. It falsifies the present, and it falsifies the future. It falsifies statistics ... It pretends to fear nothing. It pretends to pretend nothing.
Vaclav Havel

. . . . .

Injustice is relatively easy to bear; what stings is justice.
H. L. Mencken

. . . . .

We have reached a point of diminishing returns in our public life. Hardly anything actually needs doing. We may in fact be past that point; not only does nothing much need doing, but we'd benefit if much of what has been done were to be undone.
John Derbyshire

. . . . .

The hallmark of authoritarian systems is the creation of innumerable, indecipherable laws. Such systems make everyone an un-indicted felon and allow for the exercise of arbitrary government power via selective prosecution.
Ayn Rand

. . . . .

Tyranny is defined as that which is legal for the government but illegal for the citizenry.
Thomas Jefferson

When you are fed, there are many problems. When you are hungry, there is one problem.
NoPension at Zero Hedge

We have reached the stage where satire is prophecy.
Theodore Dalrymple

. . . . .

Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small. In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, nor to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better.

When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity.

To assent to obvious lies is to co-operate with evil, and in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control.

I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.
Theodore Dalrymple
